The Competition Cadet Training Ship Knysna hosted a
National Drill Competition, in which units from the Western,
Southern, and Eastern Cape participated, this past weekend. Regrettably the
logistics of moving the other Training Ships to Knysna was just
to expensive and they opted out. Cadets
from Cape Town, St. Francis Bay and Port Elizabeth arrived in Knysna
on Friday evening. While
the Capetonians were accommodated at the High School Hostel, the
others were at TS Knysna, in Union St.
Very High Standard
The competition was judged on a static
inspection of uniform, dress and bearing, then drill at the halt, and
finally drill on the march. Admiral Theo Honiball SAN (Ret), one of the
adjudicators, said “The standard of drill was extremely high, and
from all the units, making it very difficult to place them in an
order. I have just come back from a Conference of Chiefs of the
Navies of Africa, and many other from the rest of the world, held in
Cape Town. I can assure you that the standard of drill displayed
here today was better than that of the South African Navy.
Congratulations to you all!”
Winners and Losers
As in all competitions, there were
winners and losers. First place went to TS Lanherne of Port
Elizabeth, second place to TS Knysna, third place to TS Woltemade of
Sandvlei, Cape Town and
fourth place was filled by TS Kromme, a relatively new unit from
St Francis Bay.
